about

Music for the Dante Dances, performed by Urbanity Dance at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s Dante Celebration in Boston, MA, October, 2016.

The inspirations for the music and dance were drawn from Cantos V (The Lustful) and XXV (The Thieves) from “Inferno,” and Cantos X (Sphere of the Sun) from “Paradiso.”

While the text has proved timeless through its influence on both high and pop culture (which was Dante’s intent – to mix the divine with the “vulgar”), so has the courtyard where the dance took place, living and breathing meticulously as if frozen in the year 1919, as stipulated by Mrs. Gardner’s Estate.

Both the text and venue are ancient, with the Gardner courtyard containing architectural elements that date from pre-year 0, more than a millennium before Divine Comedy was written. I tried to reflect these qualities in the piece. One of my favorite moments, from “Lovers,” is the reference to Lancelot, as relevant today as it was when Divine Comedy was written, already more than a century after Le Morte D'Arthur was first printed.
